Do they disassemble quickly? Or is the axle tube one piece?

The Cat Trax brand axle is one piece - about 8' long. That's why they shipping on them is so expensive.

The "Euro Trax" brand has an axle that's two piece and comes apart with an allen wrench. I don't think they're sold in North America anymore, though.

You could easily modify Cat Trax to come apart in the middle - you just need a sleeve that fits either inside or outside the axle join.

And the only way to get parts is from Europe, as I found out the hard way. The plastic clamps which hold the wheels in place break easily when you try to tighten them around the axle, then they wiggle out of place and the wheels wobble. I ended up drilling a hole in the axle and putting a screw in it to keep the wheel in on one side at least.

Matt's solution sounds viable.

Thanks, I'm looking to buy a set since I'll be keeping my Hobie on a beach now and used to trailer it so I never needed them...The closest place that sells Hobie stuff (as far as I know) is about 60 miles away and I'm not sure if it'll fit inside the car with the wheels deflated. It's a Mazda3 hatchback....If it doesn't fit I guess I'll just throw it on the roof rack...I'm pretty sure it'll fit inside though.

Do the wheels come off easily?

If you buy them new, ask the dealer not to assemble them. You'll have the axle (2" x 8+"), the two tires and a bag of bearings (Delrin rods) and other parts. All but the axle should fit in the car.

The tires are held in position by two large cotter pins. They are easily removed with a pair of pliers.

I just picked up a set from Sturgis boat works on cape cod west yarmouth, they had them in stock and i assembled them it took about fifteen minutes to do they came in a box, they are a hobie dealer and very nice to deal with, cat trax are great for moving boat I have h18 1981 and it is heavy but I was able to move it on the beach by myself

Why take the cat trax apart? I transport mine on top of the hulls just infront of the front cross beam. Mine has the cradles and I position it with the cradles pointed down. :wink:

no boat yet, need to pick up the cat trax before the boats arrival on Saturday, so I can take it off the trailer and move it across the beach.

The boats aren't that heavy if they aren't rigged and can be carried by hand to the beach if you enlist a couple somewhat strong guys.

On the east coast, especially in New England, the beaches can be very wide, especially at low tide. The difference in distance between high and low tide can be over 100 yards. It's not practical to carry the boat that far.

The beach is actually pretty narrow, but I'll be single handing most of the time so it just made sense to get a set of cat trax to help me out....I've got to pull the boat about 50ish feet. The Getaway is pretty darn heavy for me to be dragging through the sand by myself.

Beach wheels are the best way to go, but if they aren't available there is another way. I was responding to his time limit and didn't mean it as a permanent solution to getting the boat to the water.

Thanks Mike, A little late, I already have a deposit down on a new set here. Dealer said it should be in before Friday, Dealer also said they've been backlogged for awhile and they just happened to order one extra set which I happily snapped up.
