Ok I have an old boat. There is stainless attached to aluminum. Now correct me if I am wrong but aluminum will corrode in gavanic action before the stainless. What do you guys do for the areas around the bails and rivits to inhibit and remove corrosion?
Thanks

It's only a problem if you sail in salt water and don't rinse the boat with fresh water afterwards.

My boat came pre corroded. How can I remove the corrosion?

Light scrubbing with a Scotch-Brite pad and lots of fresh water will take care of most of it. You need to remove all traces of salt, which acts as an electrolyte between the aluminum and the stainless steel. Aluminum, being the less "noble" metal, is the loser in the chemical reaction.

The anodizing on the aluminum is a very hard layer of aluminum oxide. Corrosion occurs when it's scratched (or drilled for a rivet), exposing bare aluminum. Bare aluminum oxidizes very quickly when exposed to air, forming a protective layer. However, this layer is not nearly as durable as the anodizing.

Just my 2 cents...

Alodine 1132 Touch N Prep Coatings

Top coating and sealing the exposed aluminum w/ a non-porous paint is the next step http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/ The trick is getting paint to stick to the surrounding hardcoat anodized surface.

Penetrol will keep your black hardcoat looking new http://www.flood.com/paint-additive-solutions/products/view-product.jsp?productId=11&gclid=CKjb06zIoKMCFQElnQodTmzAog

Good luck
