It's time for me to buy a harness. I don't race, I just like to go fast. Which is more comfortable and practical? Thanks |

I've used a bucket for the skipper (comfort and ease of movement) and a full harness for the crew (allows them more support when leaning way out). ![]() |

I myself have used just a standard bucket for 30+ years. Great movement allowed especially when hiking out and arching my back for better leverage. Others like the extra back support a full harness gives. The bucket is the simplest to put on and off and is the cheapest also. Best bet is to borrow the different types from buddies and see which one you like the best. |

Success already posted and that experienced for years by others notwithstanding, I found several posts warning of putting your entire weight, shifting and pounding at times, on your crotch like you do in a butt bucket. One female sailor even termed them "couchie cutters." Two butt buckets came with my boat, but with my wife and two daughters learning to sail with me I elected not to even bother and sprung for the harnesses. No disrespect meant to the other positive posters. For what it's worth.... |

i am stocky 5'9" 225lbs lacrosse/football type and the original diaper seat kills me everywhere. Who has a suggestion? please know that i don't hike out too much but plan to start more now that i have a better crew. |

I use a butt bucket and its fine for me when skippering. I'm usually in more of a sitting position, though I tend to lean way out when it does start to get really windy. As a crew - full harness is the way to go. As a crew i'm out flat 90% of the time... and without that extra support... your back will be screaming at you. Try a few different styles and what feels best and works best for you. |

If you go with a bucket, get one with a spreader bar. |

I have old windsurfing harnesses all bucket or seat harnesses. I have 3 with the hobie spreader bar, which I purchased and one with a windsurfing spreader bar. I can sit for hours in the harness and have no problems with comfort. They are also comfortable for most body sizes, ie from 80 pound kids to 250 pound men. |
