Post subject:  painting or gelcoating?

Sometime this spring I was hoping on putting a new finish on my '87 H17, but I am not sure what to do. Currently it is the original factory light blue, but the boat needs to be wetsanded, etc. to get the nice blue back in the hulls, and I was thinking about just changing the color totally. Around the internet I've found a couple cats with a lime green finish that looked really cool, so I was going to do that, but I don't know how I should go about it. Some people on the internet talk about just re-gelcoating the boat with the color you want mixed in, etc. and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone ever tried this or have any good advice?

thanks

Tyler

There are plenty of threads about refinishing your boat. Do a search in this forum and also look in the forums on:

http://www.catsailor.com

do a search there for painting the hulls.

My personal view is sand off the gelcoat and use an expoy paint like Interlux. But, there are many more qualified people to answer that question than me.

I am planning on doing the same thing this fall so I have been asking around about it too.

When you are thinking about painting, it's time to buy a new boat as the sails are dead, the decks are soft, the bottom is worn out, the lines are shot, the wires rusted and worn, the tramp ripped, the daggerboard cracked, the comptip about to fail.

Besides, there is a reason the factory stopped making lime green boats...
