I am working on a Hobie 20 and a Hobie 17 Sport. I am looking for people to sail with. I have four kids that are getting old enough to get into it. Anyone around the Corpus Christi area sailing? |

My home port is Shreveport, LA, and I'm close enough to S. Texas that I've done some research on Hobie sailing in your area. The jist of it is that Hobie Class Association (HCA) sanctioned Hobie regattas emphasizing one-design Hobie class racing is dead in South Texas. They have gravitated towards open multihull regattas in which boats of different classes compete on a Portsmouth handicap basis. I prefer one-design, it's more competitive. But if open regattas are what you've got in your area, participate, they'll welcome you with open arms. A new HCA ruling allowing non-Hobie F18 classes to compete with Hobie F18s at HCA events may change Division 6's mode of operation to some extent. On the other hand, the H20 is very active in Divsion 14, N. Texas, Oklahoma, S. Kansas and Arkansas. Since Shreveport is practically in E. Texas, I race with Div 14 and am a member of Hobie Fleet 23 in Dallas. That's the low down from my perspective. Here's a list of links that may be helpful, probably some of the same ones that Wessels is sending you: Hobie Division 14, http://www.div14.hobieclass.com/ Hobie Division 16, http://groups.google.com/group/division-6 note that their home page has a picture of a NACRA on it - We plan to organize a Shreveport fleet this winter and this photo is an indication of why we want to organize as a Division 14 fleet rather than Division 6. Hobie Class Association, http://www.hca-na.org/, click on "contacts", then click on "fleets" and you'll see a list of all the North American fleets, including six in Texas Hobie Fleet 23, http://www.hobiefleet23.com/ Texas City Dike Yacht Club, http://www.tcdyc.com./ Shreveport Yacht Club; http://www.shreveportyachtclub.memberlodge.com/, not in your immediate area, but I'll give my club a shameless plug any chance I get. Mariner Sails, Dallas Hobie Dealer, http://www.mariner-sails.com/, outstanding service! Hope all this helps. |

Yea, that's all great but what you don't know is that a Hobie Fleet of about 13 boats reactivated Fleet 33 just recently. |

That's great news! Where is Fleet 33? By the way, there is a good H17 presence in S. Texas. Some of them regularly participate in Fleet 23 regattas. There are several in the Austin/San Antonio area and another in Galveston. |

Ledfoot, We are starting a new fleet up here in Shreveport (it's practically East Texas). Our host club, Shreveport Yacht Club, will most likely hold their spring regatta on the weekend of 30 Apr-1 May. The date's not solid just yet. We've got three H20's and hope to have some Division 14 boats come over to participate. Come on up! Fa1321tx, Bring your 18 up. It's a safe bet that we'll at least have a Portsmouth multihull class for you. MVD |

Thanks guys. I think I might try racing the 17 this year. I have a 14 yrar old daughter that I have been trying to get into racing the 20, but she is more excited about the mall! I think my best bet is to try for the 17. Do most of the Houston guys sail at Texas City Dike? I sailed there many years ago (like 18) when I lived in Clear Lake. |

Ledfoot how is this thread working out for you? I have some family down in Texas as well and may be making a spring trip to the beach down there to warm up from this winter weather....Hoping this forum is producing a good social group for you! |

So far, I have learned a lot. Unfortunately that includes the fact that there are not many South Texas Sailors on here. I plan on running the 2011 season in my 17. The weather has been cold here, for us anyway. But still more days with the A/C on than the heater this winter...you gotta love south Texas in the winter! |

I have a daughter the same age who is somewhat ambivilent about the hobie 16 but she will go if i ask. we have launched at the beach in port Aransas and at the point on the north beach next to the bridge. I also took the 16 under the causeway bridge between portland and Corpus, (just walked it through) but i got a bad scratch on one of the old bridge pilings on the south side of the bridge. |

Ledfoot, Check out the topic regarding "Fleet 401 Reactivated in Shreveport". There's a post there by SplashTx that says they've reactivated Fleet 33 in Surfiside, TX. He's got a link to their Facebook page where you can learn more about them. I think there's hope for South Texas after all. |
