Harken or Ronstan, either are a good choice.

I have heard there is some way to covert the old style Seaway blocks to low profile ones....HOW? seems like a ton of money could be saved!! |

My Seaways are just about done.They've lasted 29 years and don't owe me a knickel,so I going to spend the $300. and upgrade to the low profiles for next spring.Everyone on this forum seems to think it's money well spent. |

I don't see how it would be possible. The Seaway system uses single and double blocks. For a 6:1 low-profile system, you need two triple blocks (one with ratchet and cleat, the other just a plain triple). Honestly, the Seaways are not worth wasting your time with. The Harken blocks and cleats are a vast improvement. The Harken blocks run more smoothly, and the cleats and ratchet operate much more easliy. Harken makes top quality gear that lasts for years. I would not be surprised at all if you got 15 trouble free years out of a set of Harken blocks. sm |

Fastcat is right.Here in Ottawa at the local outfitter the H194 is $208. and a Ronstan triple block is $60.95....$20. cheaper than the Harken.Christmas is coming!!Where's my MasterCard???

EASY - PEAZY!! This was something a few of us did "back in the day" when we had more time than money. It gave us the trick low-profile set-up for less than $5 in parts. What we did was drill out the rivets on the Seaways and purchase a few stainless bolts/nuts/washers to run the blocks back together. We just snugged it all up and cut the bolt to length. Then smoothed off the burrs. You can do this with just some basic hand tools. Email me if you have any problems. don_atchley(at)frontier(dot)com |
