| Post subject: | Which Hobie is right for me |
I got in to sailing last year, crewing and occasional skippering on the High School sailing team at my local yacht club. I'm going to be moving on to a lake large enough to sail on within the next few months so I asked my skipper what kind of boat I should get (he knows a lot about boats and sailing). He asked me what I wanted to do, and so I guess I should give you all the same info. I want something I can single hand or bring someone with me [experienced(ie my skipper) or not (ie family or friends)] but that is still fast and fun. Hiking with a trapeze looks incredibly fun, though I've never done it before I'm definitely open to learning it. My friend said a hobie cat is the way to go, but I am not sure which one. Was hoping someone who has been using them longer could give me some input as well. I currently race 420s and v15 boats in the ocean, if that helps. |

Hobie 16. Any other questions? Seriously - largest catamaran racing class in the world, lots of support, parts are easy to get, easily singlehanded for fooling around. If you're thinking about racing, though, I wouldn't get anything older than a '96, unless it's a super light '84 or '85. Where are you located? |

Hobie 16! Still the Best Ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What ocean have you been sailing on? I have been sailing a 16 since i was 15yrs old, 45 now. as a crew or skipper. I have sailed on others Prindle, Nacra, H18 without wings, etc. It's like it's written - Hobie 16 Still the best ride! |

Hobie 16! You have the option to race or recreation sail by yourself or with others. It's the most versatile boat for a young fella like yourself. You can also add a spinnaker to it to expand you enjoyment and test you abilities. Join a nearby Hobie Fleet. You'll find races (regattas), recreational sail with a group, and learn more about your boat and improve your knowledge and skills. Good luck! |

I live in WA usa, turn 16 this weekend = money = buying a boat  I sail puget sound 3x a week in 420s during the NW youth circuit. I found http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/b ... 56714.html on craigslist, my friend said it looks good but sounds like its too old for racing? |

I live far in Olympia, so driving 1 hour or more isn't really reasonable for me, as I am getting a boat, which means getting a car would take even longer. If I am getting the hobie 16 for personal fun only (I am fine with racing vanguard class boats) but like to go fast is an older model still good? |

Go for a 18 then, if you want to fit your family on (or girlfriend  ) its wicked fast and you can depower it pretty easy if your single handing and the wind gets too high

The H18 SX has wings, which increase the comfort level quite a bit for cruising |

A H16 is good, so is a H17 or H14. You can solo each. The H16 & H14 are abundant on the used market. |
