Is there an advantage/disadvantage on mast rotation beyond what came from the factory? It looks like the mast part on my project boat has been filed to were theres actually no stop? Will this cause a problem? thankz |

George: I use to have the sail track on mine line up with the side shrouds. I punched the battens in real tight. I used the main sheet to flatten the sail and could out point anyone in my fleet. Depends somewhat on the rig and then the point of sail. Usually max rotation downwind is a good thing on most any boat. Some rigs without diamonds or with loose diamond wires depower with more rotation. Other rigs with tight dimonds or prebent masts depower with less rotation. The Wave, Getaway and Hobie 17 Sport are all freely rotating masts with no stops. They are also all boomless. A freely rotating mast with a boom could be a problem as the boom compression against the mast would cause the mast to rotate to the point of possibly damaging the gooseneck or boom fittings. |

I should of stated its a 77 h-16 that has a million miles on it. Im just wanting to sail it, and just needed to know if i have to build up the stops to prevent catastropic damage or if it will stay in the water like it is. All i remember is light wind days and the constant banging of the mast against th e stops?? |

H16 with no stops? I think that would be a problem as the boom on the 16 has significant compression against the mast when sheeted hard. Without stops the boom would force the mast to rotate till the gooseneck would be inverted I'd bet. That could not be good. |
