well its time to shop for new sails for the 21se and my question is where can i find info for all the different types of sail cloth laminates, to try and make a decision on what to buy for my new sails. the debate is on : dacron last long time vs. composite or laminate not so durable but more performance? that is the dilemma ' thanks in advance for any advice, sugestions Ted |

I did a search on the Forum.... http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/search.php?keywords=mylar&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=13&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search&sid=fdf61e98e6b96b360391045f6dba9eb5 Ask your Hobie dealer, and call Chip at Whirlwind Sails. Dacron lasts an awfully long time, we have some H16's at our Club with 15 year old jibs...yes, they are blown out, however these are training boats. Mylar is great, does not last more than a couple of years, depending how you sail, and eventually delaminates as did mine. A good sailmaker or your dealer will ask you how often you sail, what kind of sailing you do etc, and guide you to the most appropriate cloth. Pentex is newer technology, a strong thread encapsulated between two layers of plastic...great performance, and the sail really keeps its shape. However, after three or four seasons, pinholes develope, and like Mylar, you'll have to go shopping again. Having said that, I made the choice of performance over longevity....Chip, where are my new sails? That's because we only have a 15 week sailing season here in Ottawa Canada, and I wanted to make the most of my time on the water. If we lived in Tortola or Ft Lauderdale, I might have chosen Dacron. |

I've had dacron (H16 OME), mylar laminate (H17 OME) and Pentex (H17 aftermarket). I prefer the Pentex of the 3. I got my Pentex squaretop from Chip at Whirlwind 4 seasons ago (~40+ sailing days/season) and except for the sail window it has held up well (I used mylar repair tape to mend the cracks in the window). |
