Aluminum Casting # 61120001 on top. Stainless Channel # 61110000 on bottom. The casting is certainly custom molded to fit the hull and it is wider.

What is the difference between this casting for the bow tang (61120001)and a normal channel retaining? 61110000 I have tried a normal one and it fits under the bow tang ok it just needs 2 more holes drilled thru and it would do the same function at a fraction of the price.what do you think? can you see any inconveniences in doing it this way? http://www.mariner-sails.com/assembly.asp?id=23210 Has anyone got theese installed on there boat? any photos? My 1981 hobie 18 has not got them but I might do the upgrade using the normal channel retaining with 2 more holes drilled in it!!!!!!!!! |

I would have thought all Hobie 18s from day one had the castings under the bow tangs. I don't recall any time that they were not there. Might work with the stainless parts but... I can't imagine why they would not have used a stainless piece here except that there is a structural reason of some kind. I don't know what that would be. I just looked at both parts. They have about the same foot print and slightly convex surface where they touch the rail. The aluminum piece may be a better fit as the stainless part is not as tapered at the edges. Perhaps the sharper edges of the stainless part may point load the inside of the rail. Also... it is possible that the aluminum part is actually stiffer. The stainless may give too much under load. |

Maybe previous owner lost them ...who nows...There is a kind teflon washer under the screw on the top and under the nut at the bottom.. this setting seems to give the setup a bit of flex... The teflon washer looks like it could be those parts that come in the tiller conector kit? that look like mini mast step bearings. you know what i mean? I´ll try and post a pic some time tomorrow to see if this setup is standard or some strange invention by previous owner... Matt could you post a photo of the casting for under the bow tang? Thanks! |

You really need the alum casting under the lip to distribute the loads from the bow tangs. The SS is under the lip at the crossbars and the shroud unless the owner has upgraded to the anchor plates (a must do in my opinion). |

No, the spacers on top of the plate are not standard and should be removed. |

The boat has been painted. I will make an assumption that they lost the castings when they were working on it. That makes sense as the bolts are too long now because of the missing castings and they had to add the washers on top to take up the extra length. |
