Post subject:  Tiger and a Getaway - dilemma
Three seasons ago I bought a new Hobie Getaway and learned to sail and really loved it. Then late last season I bought a lightly used Hobie Tiger as I was looking for a more technical boat and to increase the excitement on days with moderate winds. On the few days that I sailed the Tiger before the snow arrived I was thoroughly impressed. Now my dilemma is whether I should keep both boats or if I should sell the Getaway.

I'd like to know if those of you who have two beach cats find you use both of them enough to justify keeping two?

More importantly, for those that have higher performance cats similar to the Tiger do you find that you can take young kids or inexperienced friends/family along for a ride?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I've got a Hobie 20 and a 14. I primarily sail the 20, but it's nice to have the 14 around on days when I can't find a crew. Sometimes on afternoons after work when there's not much time, the simplicity of the 14 allows me to get out on the water for a couple of hours when it wouldn't be practical to rig, launch and then put away the more complex 20. I find the 20 makes a good kid hauler if they are a little bit sailing savvy and game for some excitement. However, I wouldn't take young kids out on a 20 in winds above 10 kts for fear of scarring them for life. The 20 is overpowered, I don't know if the Tiger is or not or to what degree. You'll have some work cut out for you to get new sailors comfortable with the complex rigging on the Tiger. I think the simplicity of the Getaway would be one of it's strengths relative to inexperienced sailors. Keep the Getaway? I think it comes down to how often you want to sail something simple, particularly if you're often time constrained, and your sailing audience. Money may be a consideration too. Maintaining, storing, insuring, etc., is always more expensive for two boats.

The multi multi dilemma.
Are two cats better than one?
Cost, sailing frequency and boat storage are key factors.

But it all depends on how much you go sailing. I get out on the water 3-4 times a week and like to switch up boats depending on wind conditions and crew availability. Sailing location also must be taken into consideration.

At our main sailing spot we are fortunate to have inexpensive mast up beach storage ($25 a month each). So it is feasible for us to have more than one boat ready to go. Our primary boat at that lake is a Hobie 20 and the secondary is an 16 that we lend out to friends to get them hooked on cat sailing. We also frequent other lakes, so we have a newer h16 and h18 on trailers ready to go.

Yeah that's a lot of a boats so tell your wife you will limit the boat count to two. or if you need another one I have a h14 ready to sell.

I've got five right now, but going to pare that down to three this Spring...
primary reason is I've got my eye on a 17 and an 18.

Couldn't justify keeping the 20 as I lost my "ace" crew.

I've got a 14, a knockabout 16, and a race only 16.

If my "ace" crew moves back to the area I could justify buying a Tiger.

I can justify building a storage barn/shop on my property :wink:

One can never have enough multi-hulls ! :D

John I presently sail at Lake Perry. Can you give me some benefits of sailing at Lake Clinton. I've looked at your Fleet website and noticed that it looks like you all have a nice sandy beach to launch off of. BUT looks like a person needs those overpriced cat wheel thingy mabobbers to do that. Is there any other launching options at Lake Clinton?

Friends and family always want to goof around and the Wave, like the Getaway, is fairly goof-proof. So I keep the Wave for goofing around. You can't jump around on the hulls of a Tiger or FX without possibly damaging something.

Benefits? I like the the three mile reach unobstructed by shoreline.
