Hey friends! I thought I'd introduce myself being new. I live in Aiken, SC and I've been kite buggying and landsailing for a few years and am on my way to pick up Tosimple4's H16 tomorrow rain or shine! A friend of mine in the Power Kiting hobby with me has posted this vid (on Power Kite Forum) of resurecting a trashed Hobie and turning (some of it ) it into a kite powerd cat. Thought you might enjoy. I guess if you love the wind, you love anything to do in it!? Several guys on the Powerkite Forum encouraged me to grab a Hobie so here I am. Thanks for this awesome forum and I'm sure to learn tons from you all. Good winds, Chris [vimeo]http://www.vimeo.com/13286722[/vimeo] |

cool video and nice looking boat. What will the kite do when the wind is cranked up, I am curious of the performance of a kite boat compared to a sailboat? |

With the kites he's flying (an 18 meter Phantom, I think), fully powered he might get moving well, not sure what he's reached in speed runs yet. I talk to him occasionally on the forum so I'll ask and post it for shizzles and giggles. That kite is a serious kite surfing machine from a few years ago with lots of power on the right days. |

I've got two PL Phantoms like the one in the vid, 12 & 15m, and there is a HUGE PL contingent of land and water kiters around the US. A bunch of folks probably near you in NC. Go to weather = Sail upwind I think some kites can go upwind but not as well as a sailboat, I however have never done it, just read about it and seen some at the beach |

Oh, yes, sorry, ![]() Some of my kites go nearly 15 degrees or so from dead upwind due to the way we can fly them in a sine pattern to generate power and huge apparent wind. When I'm riding a landsailer, close hauled and creeping along, I get passed by land kites all the time. |

Interesting. Ditch the big glass Hobie 16 amas and change to Tandem Island amas, might get up and boggie a bit then, not sure what you would do for rudders but you can figure it out as you go ![]() |
