Hello,
I have a recently acquired Holder 20 and have some questions. I searched this forum and saw 1 Holder 20 post. Is there a Holder 20 forum, group, org, etc? I had little luck finding anything myself with an online search.

IIRC, the Holder 20 was the humble beginning of an amazing sport boat, the Ultimate 20. http://www.u20class.org/ I believe the story was Moore's sailboat shop somehow wound up with the Holder 20 molds. A group of (mostly) Santa Cruz sailors (Jeff Canepa of Tornado cat fame, Jim Antrim of sport boat fame, and Larry Tuttle of 505 fame) gave the Holder 20 a diet of steroids, or some kind of naval architect magic, and out came the Ultimate 20.

The original version is a great family lake boat.

Thanks for the reply.

I've gone to the Hoder20.com site and there's no "Contact Us" link and no forum.

What I need to ask a Holder20 forum is how to mount a motor to the back. My slip at the lake (Nockamixon, PA) is the closest one to shore and I have to navigate between a long boulder breaker on one side and all the other slips on the other. One of these days, I'm a novice, I'm gonna' run aground on those boulders or snap a motor off one of the other sailboats.
I have an Evinrude JR with a whopping 1.2hp but not sure how to mount it.

Best bet is to contact someone through that Holder 20 website. We have no information here on that boat. Was only sold in the mid 80's.

Hello Matt,
From what I recall, the motor was just attached to the transom. I board was placed on the outside of the hull to help the motormount to clear the hull/deck joint. If it was my boat, I would place a metal outboard plate on the inside of the cockpit to keep the turn screw washer things from damaging the gelcoat.

The outboard on the shop's Holder 20 at the time was a small one with an internal fuel tank. Just enough to get it off the dock. The boat is small and light so it does not take much to push it around. We would place the motor in the bilge when racing to take the weight off the end of the boat.

It's a great sailing boat, much like a big Laser. Hammond's post is right on about the block of wood and metal bracket. We have wished several times that we didn't sell the last one we had.

Without the rudder, and the motor to get through shallow water, you will have control only going straight and slowly. It will spin out really easily without the rudder, and get to a point that you have no control with just the motor. Unfortunately, the rudder does not tilt up, so you can't have it on the back of the boat in shallow water. Hopefully, your slip has plenty of water.

The first couple of years it was made ('85 and '86???)the cockpit was a few inches longer, and the cabin smaller than the last few years. They added a bit of cabin space, but it still had a big cockpit.
