Post subject:  Windex or wind-tels

Hi, I haven't sailed in many years, money is tight, and I need to know which way the wind blows.

I have a Holder 20 and I'm looking at either the Davis Wind-Tels that mount to the shrouds

or Windex 15 for the top of the mast http://www.davisnet.com/marine/products ... pnum=03150

any luck with the Wind-Tels. I'm leaning towards them. Any other suggestions?

I'm using 2 pieces of VHS tape tied to each shroud. I'm considering adding another piece to the shackle the connects the bridles to the forestay for the crew when tacking.

Old cassette tape works well too, I keep the whole cassette with me because someone always needs an indicator and letting them rip off a couple of feet of tape does the trick

On my H-16, I use two pieces of knitting yarn tied on either side of the bridle. It is easy, cheap, and won't rip off while trailering on the highway. I found cassette tape will tear off at 60 mph or so.

You did ask about the wind-tels, I have a set in my junk pile somewhere, that's what I thought about them. I found they would move and rotate on the shroud wire, sometimes pointing downward. Never could get them tight enough to stay put. I guess you could tape them in place but never tried. I use a bridle fly along with my cassette tape.

The advantage of the old cassete tape vs yarn ... is the tape doesn't retain water and "droop" .....

I use a old "Bob Marley' Cassette ..... Rastiman Vibration ..... (nothing like a little "island" music while sailing ......)

I thought I could hear you singing something out there on the race course last year??

+1 on the cassette tape. I have tried a more modern approach with CDs but they don't work quite as well..... :D

This is the 8-track I'm "listening to" now - on the bridles:

8-track tape is the perfect width.

Matt, are you on track 1? That would be "Carry On Windward Son"
