Sailing a getaway-big heavy boat. doesnt like to turn on a dime.

The tiller is hard to push and to pull when i make hard turns and i want a tiller with a handle on the end that is more like a snow shovel handle.

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Any suggestions?

thanks for your thoughts

cut off a snow shovel handle and duct tape it to the tiller

If you have a hot stick, get yourself a cork ball end for it

I think ForeSpar makes the type of tiller you're looking for.

Regarding the cork ball, I sprung for it and have found that it disintegrates pretty quickly. Once it gets wet I end up with little bits in my hand all day long. It will have to be replaced sooner than I hoped. Next I'm going to epoxy on a handball ball. They're roughly the same size as the cork ball but will certainly last longer. For what it's worth....

Try wrapping the cork with hockey stick tape, it's water proof and holds up well. You can buy it at most sporting goods stores and it's cheep. I just rolled some of the tape into a big ball and then wrapped that to the end of my stick.

Interesting, and considering the fact that I'm an active ice hockey goalie I certainly have plenty of tape in my bag

I have the Arriba hiking stick but it has lost the end cap. I was thinking of buying the cork ball for the end mostly to keep water out of the stick & to make the end float when I throw it back behind the boat during a tack. However reading the above post about it falling apart I am not so sure. They also sell just a rubber grip that slides over the stick and I was considering that also.

Maybe I will just use hockey tape made into a ball at the end and sealing the end to keep the water out. That sounds cheap and easy.

The Arriba stick with the twist and extend feature is great for my H18 with wings. I can extend it to the length I need on the water and it is bigger diameter with a rough finish to make it easy to hold onto. If your rudders are adjusted right you will not need a lot of force on the tiller.

Go to the hardware store and see if a PVC pipe T will fit. If it is a little large, tape up the end of the stick and force it together.

If you just want an end on it, try a table leg protector.

I replaced my cork ball because it eventually fell apart. On the new one, I put on 2 thin coats of epoxy, and sanded with 60 grit after it cured. It's held up very well and grips really good with or without gloves.
