Post subject:  Needed my knife!

I have been sailing my Hobie for five years. Today was the first time out with a knife attached to my life vest. We flipped and the main sheet went around me and the boom somehow and was dragging me under. My crew tried to help but could not get me free. I had to cut the sheet. BUY and use a Knife!

Have one, but good post. Maybe need to get dyneema shrouds too to be safe.

Racing the SF NOOD's almost had to cut my harness off . Got hung on the shroud plate and went full turtle under the boat. Had my knife in hand ready to cut away when I came loose. Knowing that knife was there was a great comfort.

Good Knife $100.00
Being alive because you had it. Priceless!

I saw my gerber sitting in the door of my car on Saturday, nearly tossed it into my vest, I will from now on!

At the 16/20 NAs in Alameda a boat almost flipped and the crew fell overboard. The skipper was tangled up in the main sheet and sheeted in probably sailing 10 knots or so. Completely wrapped up and unable to do anything but steer the boat with his wrist.

We came along side in the SC Skiff and I had my knife at the ready to start cutting the entire mess apart, especially if the boat flipped. Luckily, I was able to uncleat the jib, slow the boat, and untangle him without too much trouble. A knife is an important tool aboard a sailboat.

At the Extreme 40 Sailing series in Boston 2 weeks ago, I noticed that they had a knife strapped to the trampoline on all four corners. It's actually in their class rules to have knives onboard. It's a crew member's job everyday prior to racing to make sure that the knives are sharpened and ready for the day.

Here's a pic that I snapped from ETNZ, see the knife on the tramp in the foreground?

That is good shot. Little more to right and more boat in the foreground and you're next Ansel Adams!

Do like the blunt nose knives. Don't like a sharp point. Hope that's some kind of scuba diver knife there.

Thanks, J! That's the best I could do. I was hanging on like a scared cat. :D

I bought a foldable that I keep in my harness for safety. Now I'm thinking it's better to have a rigid blade so that it's always ready.

Thoughts?
