Hi,Looking for a used hobie, I'm seeing quite few H14s and H16s. What are the main differences between the the two other than length? I've noticed that most of the 14s do not have a jib, is it possible to add one? Thanks Neal |

The 14 is designed for one person. It can carry two, but performance and handling suffers greatly. More than 200 lbs on a 14 is a lot. You can add a jib (the "Turbo" option), but it elevates the complexity for one person without adding tremendously to performance. It does make tacking easier. The 16 is designed for two people. It can be singlehanded fairly easily, but you have to make provisions for righting - like a water bag - to ensure you can right the boat if you capsize. The 16 will handle about 350 lbs before it gets really sluggish. The 16 is probably the better boat for most people - the 14 is a great boat, but it's not as versatile and the cost difference is not that great. |

Ok, in that case I'm leaning toward the 16. There might be an occasion where there would be 4 of us, but mostly 2 and sometimes just me. Hopefully I can muddle thru when there are more than 2 of us. Are there any specific things I should check when looking to purchase an h16?Any wear points or year of boat to avoid? Thanks Neal |

Soft spots in the hulls are the number one thing to look out for when buying a used boat- particularly on the decks in front of the forward pylons. 99% of the time if the boat has soft spots you're better off just walking away. Otherwise, inspect the general condition of all the major parts including trailer. Make sure everything is there and bring a Hobie catalogue with you (the printed version with price list) so that you have a realistic idea of what things are going to cost to fix/replace/upgrade. sm |
