Post subject:  Old hobie 16 age?

Just flew my first hobie this last weekend. I have so many questions, but I will start with the age of my 16. It is supposed to be from the early 70's and it has a stamped number on the posts going into the hulls (please feel free to let me know the proper name of these posts). Stamp number is 1163. That is the only number on the cat and it is what I used to register in my name. I would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
Scott

have you looked on the transom, up near the deck lip? there should be a serial # engraved in the gelcoat.

there is also a FAQ page here describing the serial numbers.

The Hobie 16 was introduced in late 1969, and the first method of serial number placement was just as you describe.

This continued until late 1972, when the practice of engraving 12 character hull identification numbers on the transom was mandated by federal statute.

It's unknown what the first production serial number was, nor what the "final" one was before Hobie Cat shifted to the newer, required system, but 1163 is indeed a boat from the early '70s. It's a testament to the durability of these boats that they're are still in service 40 years after they were made.

They're called "pylons".

Thanks for the info everyone! That is as much as I was able to get from the previous owner. Pylons... Thanks. The great thing is, the boat is still in the water and we were able to get it up on one leg at least once in the four days we took it out. I am a little concerned about the rivets in this thing. Don't get me wrong. I am unbelievably impressed with the tank-like construction, but we already have experienced some rivet ripping from the jib sheet block track (term correction?) which is decreasing my jib performance until I get some new rivets placed. Should I just keep carrying my rivet gun with me? I have a thousand mechanical questions about this boat so please keep going, but I also want to talk about repainting the hulls. What on earth do I do about the knurling on top of the hulls when it comes to reglazing? If this is a separate topic, then please inform me and I will refer to another forum topic.

Thanks
Scott

Yes, on the old boats the rivets do fail. I keep a drill and rivet gun in my tool box for that reason.
