Post subject:  Waterproof camera suggestions?
I'm tapping the collective wisdom of the commuity for suggestions of a waterproof camera to take aboard the boat. I prefer a disposable camera to save $$$, but am open to digital cameras too. Thanks.

I love my digital camera, but I use a Kodak disposable for the Hobie. No worries and you can get a disk for the computer.

I have the Sony DSC-P100, I´ve had it for over 2 years now and am very pleased with it. I would recomend it!

I also puchased the marine case for it on ebay at quite a bargain 120$ at least for me as it retails over 350 in Spain!

Ditto on the disposable water proof.

I've taken one of those out everytime, ever since I found a free one floating in the river on a white water trip! So, I can vouche for the fact they float too.

I found it's much cheaper to learn from someone elses mistake.......

I have a camera on the H18.

I just get a nice looking waterproof disposable camera and put it in the bag. Then when we are sailing I take pictures of the "crew". People usually love the sailing and when they get pictures of them trapped out and having fun it makes my day too.

Just be sure to make doubles.

With the disposable I am also not too concerned with theft/ overboard.

Yeah, I think if you're a photographic enthusiast who's not gonna be hardcore sailing, then that cybershot is wonderful. But if youre just trying to take some pics to remember the day of flying a hull, seeing dolphins swim with you, etc... then disposable is really nice. I think if i had the cybershot, the choice of camera or boat would be hard if (when) i capsize.

Post subject:  I have only taken it with me one time...
I want to install fat bags on my 18 and I think if I put the camera in the marine casing and wrap it in a towel it should be pretty safe.

The disposable cam is a good idea... but with the digi you also have the extra of videos...they are really fun...
last time I dived in and my crew sailed past while I recorded it...very nice shot!

By the way how much is a disposable water proof cam in the states?

It depends what you want. If you want to have a digital camera for general use, then buying one that has a marine case available is a great way to go. Just don't put off buying the case - camera styles change so frequently, that if you wait more than a few months, they can become unavailable.


Ditto on the Sony marine case - I have a different Sony, and it's a great solution. Just don't forget to tie it off - I don't think they float!

I buy mine at Costco in packs of 3 for $27. I only use two or three each season, so I guess after a few years its more cost efficient for me to go hardcore with a digi and case. If you go out a few times a week, I think digital is perfect. Just snap away.

Thanks for the tips. My cheapside is taking over for now, so I'll get the disposables. Any camera brands to get or avoid, or does it make a difference?

I just get the ones with the rubberized grip on the houseing at the chain supermarket.
