Has anyone been out with a gps and recorded speeds on diferent tacks and wind conditions with a H18?? I have had the crazy idea to try and do a open sea 70 Nautical Mile journey on my 18 betwen The island of Ibiza in the mediterranean and the Spanish mainland. and wanted to do a aproximate calculation on how long it would take on a day the wind allowed a straight crossing on a reach.... Water, food, gps,vhf marine radio, flares? waterproof torch...life jacket Have any of you guys done long crossings simillar to this one? |

This is something Brian Joder may want to respond to. Many years, ago, he and his brother and a friend sailed most of the Baja peninsula and the Sea of Cortez. What an adventure that must have been. Can you access 'On the Wire'? Brian, if you pick this up and want to respond. . . . Good winds |

No big open water crossings... about 20 miles we did at most. We did do a 70-75 mile leg on one day but only a mile or two out. Add to your list a good old fashion compass, a hand pump salt water desalinator (just in case) and a personal EPIRB. I'd bring a few days food and water... again, just in case. 70 miles shouldn't take you more than 5-6 hours if you indeed have a beam reach on moderate wind... of course wind and WAVES can be very different just a few miles out... Here is our trip from many years ago... http://www.hobiehawk.com/BajaAdv.html Brian |

Close reach? medium reach? other? How many hours did the 70 miles take? Aproximate Wind speeds? sea conditions Thanks We were on a pretty low reach in very light air.... at least we were with the waves. The reason we pushed the 70 miles was because we needed to make Cobo since the beach landings along the pacific coast is sketchy at best. Anyway, it took about 12 hours to do that sluggish 70 miles - ugh, got into Cobo at 9pm... Brian |
