I used one of those for years.
They have a nasty tendency to damage the inside of the traveler track.
I use the Hobie fiberglass one now:
It's about 15 years old now and the only maintenance required was to replace the padding (both top and bottom).

with that type of narrow support, you need to make sure the sail track area is completely unsupported when the mast is tied down tight. otherwise you will pinch the track in that area, making hoisting the sail a problem. |

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I'm thinking I'm thinking I may try to make a rear trailer crutch like this. http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=32763&highlight=#32763 Or just keep using the lifejacket... I'm close to installing my custom hull cradles in place of the rollers so they extra force of the mast on the rear crossbar shouldn't be as large of a concern on my hulls. |

I use 1 1/2" steel galvanized pipe from Lowe's and made a carrier using elbows and straight pieces this is bolted to the trailer front and back and has worked for several years contraption looks like a u wher it holds the mast Used to have the store bought ones and they were great on my 16 old age and sun and fun broke them I use pipe system on the 21SE the mast is heavy as H will probably use smaller one on the HC 16 The mast is padded with one of the foam mats used for exercise rooms |

Just a thought: I have and use a home-made cross-bar mounted rear support and it works OK. However, I've found that if the front of the mast is attached to the trailer support, and the rear to the boat's rear cross-beam, you can get some differential movement. In my case, the boat will occasionally shift an inch or two during transport, causing the support to rotate around the beam a bit and the mast tie-down points to shift, etc. Its not a big deal, but annoying. Unfortunately, my trailer is a bit short for a proper rear mast support solution, so I'll just have to live with it. Next boat/trailer will have a trailer based rear support (God willing...  ).

My newer boat came with the Hobie cradle that M. Bounds pictured above, and it was great....until it fell off and was lost. Now I use a couple of sections of large (5" dia.?) swim noodle. One is trimmed on the cross-section to fit the mast and the other to fit the rear crossbar. They are put on crossing each other so you end up with 5" or so of padding. A couple of bungies holds it all in place nicely, and it's stupid cheap. |

If you look closely, you can see that there is at least one other boat on the bottom, below the masts (you can see the traveller track for the self-tacking jib). Probably also a fourth boat disassembled where the trailer box would normally go (hence the box in the bed of the truck). sm |

Three boats, one spare mast.  If I through a ladder rack on the pickup I could throw three sets of hulls up there. I don't know what I'd do with all the "stuff" for them though. |
