Post subject:  H14 Mast base

I need to replace the mast base on a Hobie 14. I was told to use RTV on the base to keep the water out and to help hold the base in addition to the rivits. Wouldn't that keep water from draining out if I had to right the boat? Does it need to drain? Any info out there?

When you pull the rivets, you'll have a hole through the body of the rivet that will let the mast drain if water gets in.

The RTV isn't strictly necessary, but can be handy for keeping the base seated if you're having to drill new holes and doing it by yourself.

The mast is supposed to be water tight though.

Ahhh... But in this business, nothing ever is. "Waterproof" doesn't exist.

I wasn't sure if there were plugs in the old 14 masts near the top and bottom like there are on new boats. I did assume they used rivet caps for the tang in the old days.

"Supposed to be" is the key here.
