might buy one and was wondering if anybody had any opinions...

Both great boats. Very different though.

The 16 does not have daggerboards like the Tiger. The Tiger is twice the price. The 16 is simpler to rig and sail. The Tiger is faster, more complicated...higher tech.

I am sure we will get many more opinions here. Really depends on many factors as to what might be better for you. Skills, Beach you launch at, Racing? Cruising?...much more.

Also do you know anybody presently who sails catamarans?

There is quite a group of racers in your area. About 12 active Hobie16 sailors and 8 active Tiger sailors. If you have not already, you should go down to the Hobie dealer in Santa Rosa to find out more.

First, as Dan said, it would be nice to know what you will be using the boat for and your sailing experience. The 16 and Tiger are pretty different boats. I have several used Tigers and 16s in stock if used is the way you want to go. I can also get you a ride on each of these boats, which will help you make an informed decision. It's nice to talk to the sailors in your area that actually sail these boats. You have a very active Hobie fleet in your area, which is an awesome resource. I would really like to get into racing even though i live up to my title "Novice". The tiger sounds like a great racer but 20 feet sonds like too much for me to handle. The 16 sounds like a very good all-around boat, but can it handle 3 people? or does it sink the small hulls.

thank you all for helping me out on this. And when does the santa rosa hobie club meet? im intrested in getting into the sailing community in northern california

The Tiger is only 18 feet, but that being said it is a lot of boat. Power, speed, pure adrenaline :P...maybe too much for the Novice :wink:

Any of the boats will take three people on them. I remember having something like 10 people on a hobie 14. It did not go fast and we could not get away from the shore too far but....

I have sailed, actually raced, with three on the Tiger. The third was a niece that joined us and she could not believe that we were in last place. We could never take advantage of any good start all the way to the end of a race with the extra 100lbs on the boat. It sails okay for pleasure that way though, and have done so many times. the 16 is a bit more crowded but still capable of it.

I'm an intermediate sailor. I have a Tiger. I love the "high tech" "high speed" part.

I cringe at the delicate easily damaged part. I cringe when I get close to shore and have to race around the deck pulling up everything that hangs down.

My hull and rudder and daggerboards are green with repairs.

Dealer suggested I get a Getaway initially but my ego would not allow a plastic boat.

When I am trapped out smokin along I love the Tiger. When I am repairing the damage I dream of an H16 or H18
