Post subject: | Which Hobie for me? |
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1989 Hobie 17 with Wings. I've really been looking for a 16, but i like this 17. My questions are: - Why is the 17 referred to as a single or solo? - Do all the 17's have less carrying capacity (weight) than the 16's? - With wings, is the low tramp as much of a concern? I've sailed a 16 a few times and liked it, so if a 17 is less capable, then maybe i should stick with a 16? I will occasionally have 4 people total, so carrying capacity is somewhat important. Thanks for any input! |

Some will say the 17 is just a one man boat. I race mine all the time wit my grand daughter. Although I have added a reacher on it. I have had three adults and a 100 lbs grand daughter on mine at times, and it even tried to raise a hull. I sailed a 16 before (started on one) and I find that 17 more stable in higher winds. Is boat a SE with one sail or a Sport? If you only have a main, you must let out about 2-3 feet of sheet as you go head to wind or you will go into irons. It is a fun boat. OH, no more than 350 on the wings at one time. Here are some changes I have made. http://www.thebeachcats.com/modules.php ... _album.php Doug and Ashleigh Snell |
