Getaway or AI?

Post subject:  Getaway or AI?
finally got to see a Getaway first hand yesterday. A rental on the local beach. Looked pretty good, except front tramp gone and main tramp looking kinda thin.

In any case, am wondering whether to get one Getaway, or two AI's. Since wife and I are both sailors, dont want to get into the 'who's driving" thing, like what happens with tandem bicycles. But the Getaway has more room, more comfort, and is obviously twice as fast.

What would you do?

How about a Getaway AND one AI?

I know, I known, money.... :cry:

Tough choice. I love the Getaway as you can move around on it, and it can be use as a "party boat" for lazy evening coktail parties. On the other hand, nothing beats the AI for single jaunts in the morning before everyone else gets up and the water is like glass. You can pedal in hidden coves with a good cup of coffee and unfurl the sail when the wind picks up to come back to the rest of the world.

And you can always take both out and race... :P

I know what you mean. I've sailed (soloed) a H16 and now a H17Sport since 1983 and the wife wasn't that interested in going along. Then a couple of years ago I got her a Bravo and she is dragging me to the beach (each with our own boats). So you might want to consider a couple of Bravos. They would easily fit on a small trailer, are easy to set-up and cost about the same as a couple of AIs. :wink:

I have found myself solo for a few years because the Captain has lost some interest in getting dunked - usually a sure thing with me at the helm.

But what does this have to do with Artificial Intelligence vs Getaways ? :roll:

I don't want to denigrate the Bravo (I haven't sailed one), but for the same price as the AI, it seems the later is more versatile (kayaking). While the Bravo may take an xtra body if need be, it doesn't look like it's designed for more than one, which is the same as the AI.

It's more of a "sailor's sailboat" and the AI is more of a "kayaker's sailboat", but if the wind is down the Bravo is stuck while with the AI you simply change the mode of propulsion.

My 2 cents (disclaimer: I have an AI and I love it.)

Yeah, I agree. I like the Bravo, but if we decide to go for a catamaran it will be a Getaway.

One of the things I like about the AI is that I could use it for pretty much a full body workout if I chose to. Or just sit back and enjoy the sail.

We also have two cuts we need to get into between islands. On one side, the reef and open ocean to 5,000 ft. deep. On the other side, the Caicos Bank, which is 30 miles of shallow water. If you get the tides wrong, could be facing a knot or so of current on the nose getting in or even getting out depending upon which way you want to go. them little flipper thingys and a paddle would be a necessity. If we got the Getaway, would have to add a motor to it. Carry gasoline along, etc.

Can I post a photo on here? Can show you a Google Earth of where I am talking about.

Ok, here goes:

Hope you can see the marinas are in the cuts between islands. Wind is almost always from the NE, so to get out of a marina, or to get back to a marina under sail only is totally dependent upon which side you are on and the tides. On an ebb tide, the flow is from the Banks thru the cuts out to the ocean. Coming from offshore the reef into either marina I would have the wind and a couple knots on my nose at ebb.

Hence my seemingly intense interest in the AI that I could reef the sail and paddle.

You are going to have to add a Cheetah motor mount and a 2 hp motor, gas not electric. More bucks.

Yes, I know. Then I got to carry gasoline on board. And there are plenty of narrow places where the beach cat wont go. We have mangroves, and plenty of crooked channels surrounded by limestone, all sorts of places where wide beam is not good.

I am pretty much decided on getting two AI's instead of the Getaway now.

Besides, its cheaper.
