if the gentleman means has The Cup evolved from an exclusive rarified-air event of the NYYC and Newport genteel types, to an event that attracts and excites ordinary people? then he is spot-on correct. this is the 21st Century, not the 19th Century. if he disdains the mass culture of the current Cup, then I suggest he go back to the polo field.
