We had a VERY low sail number of 18 and a hull number of 16. Hobie Altar told us it was an original hand made boat, the sail numbers were sewn on plain white sails. The boat wrecked in the surf in Laguna Beach many, many, MANY moons ago. (1986?) Anyway, "whats your low number?" Aloha, K.Krall |

I'm sailing a '76 Hobie 16 with original Flamer sails, numbered 20060. I restored it 2 years ago after 15+ years of storage by the previous owner. I know there are older boats/sails out there, but this has to be one of the older original hull/sail combos around. It still flies, but definitely feels creakier and sloppier than the '84 I just restored. Makes me wonder how tight a brand new boat feels. |

All of the boats are "hand made" to this day. There's no machine that puts down gel coat, fiberglass, resin and foam into the molds. Regardless, the sail number has little to do with how old the boat is. It's just a number on the sail. There was a sail number 18 at the worlds last year - on a 2014 boat. ![]() |

I guess my inquiry was more to find out how many of the old original boats are still around. Stoked to hear guys are restoring the old ones! I just got back into sailing and was hoping an Adventure Island was going to spark my interest back up.....and boy did it! I'm now looking for a cat to sail ! |

bmdumr, that boat looks great! Love the two tone hulls! Ours was blue on yellow with white sails and silver tramp frame too. Keep up the great work! Aloha, Kelly |

I don't remember what my original sail numbers were, but I know they were only 4 digits. Something like 37XX and the boat's hull number makes it a '72. The numbers were falling off the sail when I bought the boat. Still have the old sails packed away to probably never be used again. Hulls were blistered beyond repair, and after many upgrades and swaps with a parts boats the only thing I can say for sure is original to the boat I started with is the mast. Things have changes a lot since then. ![]() |

I just found a 1977 16 in a shop shelved for 20 years. I had to replace batten ends and a fiew lines. |
