Post subject:  Joining the ends of cunningham lines together

Hi guys

Bought a F18 recently which was in bits so just trying to get it all setup before I set sail. Both ends of the mast cunningham/downhaul line should be joined together and stored inside the front crossbar. They cannot be permanently spliced together as this would make it difficult to remove the mast. One end of the cunningham line is set up like in the photo below but the other end of the line is cut - this is the end that I need to fix or make the same as in the photo to enable them to be joined together.

Image

Each end should have a loop on it and the two loops are joined together by the thin piece of rope. The cunningham line (RED AND BLACK) looks like it is dyneema with a cover. Each end looks like it is joined to some dyneema without a cover (WHITE) which has a loop on it. The two loops are then joined together with a thin piece of rope with two bowline knots (BLUE).

I only have this setup on one end of the cunningham line - the other end has been cut and so I need to replicate this set up on the other end.

The loop on the non covered dyneema looks like a brummel lock splice which I am okay with but the non covered dyneema looks like its joined to the main covered dyneema somehow.

Its important to note that the loops cannot have a diameter larger that of the main cunningham line as the hole in the end of the crossbar is quite small and the cunningham line needs to easily pass through it. I think this is why the lock splice is done in uncovered dyneema.

I have a couple of questions;

(i) How to tie/splice a piece of covered dyneema to uncovered dyneema.
(ii) Is there a more straightforward set up for joining the two ends of cunningham line together.

Thanks in advance, Adrian

The strength is coming from the dyneema kern, and not from the mantle.
This vid is in Dutch, but you get the idea.

Before you remove the mast,
attach a 3 mm rope at one side near the crossbar.
Pull the cunningham rope out of the crossbar at one end, attach the long (2,5 m 3 mm) rope to the other end, remove the connection rope and pull the rope through the crossbar to the other side, attach the 3 mmm rope to your boat.

Next time when the mast is raised,
attach the cunningham rope to the 3 mm rope and pull it through the crossbar on the other side and connect the two ends together.
