I found a website that gives wind information for many locations in every state in the US.

You may be surprised about the average direction and strength in each of the 12 months in your area.

See : ftp://ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/downloads/climate/windrose/

I went there to look at Long Beach CA. I was surprised that the wind was not in the "Normal Direction". We always get SW winds here usually 210 to 230. As I looked closer is said the plot was taken from 1961. Are you kidding? I did not know what a sailboat was then.

Hi Dan,
I wondered about that myself. I found that the 1961 date is the BEGINNING of the database.

The plots look like 23 hr graphs so the average windspeed and direction may be misleading.

By the way, what is the conversion from M/S to Kts/Hr?

Windspeed m/s *1.9438445= Windspeed Kts

I looked it up in case anyone is curious.

I use this handy (free) program for all kinds of conversions. It can do speed conversions from Meters per Second to Knots and all kinds of other cool stuff.

Google also does conversions.

Just type "convert x to y" in the search box.

For example:

"convert 1 meter/sec to knots" yields:

1 (meter / second) = 1.94384449 knots

The date stamp on the files themselvs is still 2003 so they still seem to be several years old.

Here is a page that describes in detail how to read the windrose for your area :

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/climate/windrose.html

The data is from 1961 through at least 1990.

Please note that the length of the arms relates to frequency, not velocity.

COLOR determines velocity.
