IM NOT LOOKING TO DEBATE USCG APPROVED VS NON-USCG APPROVED PFD's

I am not racing just looking for some extra comfort and safety while trapping, getting around the boat and sitting in a PFD for Catamaran sailing.
I sail an H17 sport. right now I just have a regular water ski PFD vest strapped to the tramp. I would like to start wearing something for added safety with my harness and probably a rash guard over the whole thing. As the 17 is a solo boat I will be out solo most of the time and something to hold a knife and handheld VHF in as well. I sail in pretty protected waters on Long Island, NY maybe a few shots out to the sound but not ocean going by any means.

Thanks for your input and reviews.

I tried quite a few PFD when I bought the Wave. Some that seemed really cool at first did not work when I was sitting down. I ended up with a cheap Cabela's PFD that has worked well (I wear a rashie under it not over it): http://www.cabelas.com/product/CABELAS-COMFORT-MESH-PFD/1801532.uts?productVariantId=3738251&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=03802933&rid=20&gclid=CLjVxN-3zs0CFQxahgod6tEMrA&gclsrc=aw.ds

I can get knives and a VHF radio in the pockets, plus a Clif Bar for hunger emergencies :)

Thanks Ive sailed waves LOTS of fun but Im more interested in the comfort and fit when wearing a trapeze harness and a PFD over it without interference.

I have the hobie thinback:

My wife has this one from Stohlquist (female specific):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006L ... UTF8&psc=1

Both are very comfortable for us. I do wish the pockets were a bit bigger on mine though. I can barely fit my VHF in it (although my Standard Horizon HX870 might be a little bigger than some more basic VHFs). The zipper pockets are only under the colored portion (V shaped, not rectangular) which was disappointing when I got it. However, there are some short, but wide elastic pockets on the black part that hold the radio pretty well. Tthe screen and antenna stick up out of it, but it stays put. The pockets on my wife's hold the radio fine with the antenna sticking out.

Any PFD you wear vs leave on the tramp is a big improvement in my book.
I have the Zhik which is really slim and comfy, I also have the Hobie PFDs. The Hobie feels a bit chunky at first, but you don't notice it for very long.
The hobie is a side zip and fits great. It rides high enough to wear a harness without issue, and adjustment straps allow a pretty fair range of size.
I bought some sailing pinnies (think rashie without sleeves) and they do a great job of covering bits that can get caught in rigging and still allow reasonable access to pockets.

We've got the Hobie PFDs, which are pretty nice, I think. We also have a pair of Onyx auto-inflating PFDs (Onyx A/M-24 Deluxe), which are very comfortable and have nice pockets for junk. And the auto-inflate feature really works, as we found out one embarrassing afternoon as we capsized about 100 feet from the dock!

I like the comfort of a neoprene 3-4 strap water ski type vest. Does any one know if there is a neoprene one that has a pocket?

I was in West Marine the other day and had some west advantage points to use $25 worth and came across their performance sailing vest. Similar to Hobie's vest. Was $69 minus the $25 so I bough it. Very comfortable, nice size pocket fits my VHF and weatherman tool. high cut that my harness hook is nicely accessible. Very pleased.
