Post subject:  Checking hulls for leakage

Hi All,
Maybe i should post this in the H17 forum, but as it's a general question i go ahead here.

I'm about to test if my hulls are leaking.
Anyone here with experience? Shall i go for a over or under pressure? Methods of detecting points and areas for leakage?
The boat is a H17, any specific areas to suspect?

What else to look for and think of?

Thanks in advance...

On a 17, the most common leaks are from the wing tubes. Fill the tubes with water, note the level, come back in a half hour and note the level again. If they're leaking, the water level will end up at the lowest leak.

Other than that, suggest you look at the "This Old Hobie" column in the Fall 2015 HOTLINE magazine - http://www.w1dm.com/Projects/HOTLINE/15-2HOTLINE.pdf

Fill a spray bottle (windex type bottle) with soapy water. Remove the drain plug and jam a piece of rubber tubing, about 6-10" long into the drain plug hole (wrap tape around the end of the tubing for a snug fit). Blow several breaths of air into the boat to positively pressurize the hull. Clamp off the tube and then walk around the boat spraying with soapy water. Wherever there are bubbles, there are leaks.

Places to check:

- The entire hull seam (where the hull & deck are glued together).
- The wing sockets.
- The end fittings where the crossbars seat to the hull.
- Dagger board trunk (particularly where the spring presses against the hull).
- Every thru-hull fitting (drain plug/gudgeon screws, tramp track rivets, bridle & shroud anchors, etc).
