I am sorry if this has been asked but I sort of googled all over the place and wasnt able to find this information. Im looking for the Max Cargo Capacity (Max Load) that a Hobie 14, 16, 18 and 20 will carry. I'm not looking for the racing max capacity, I'm looking for the safest max recreational load of each Hobie. The only one I was able to find was the H16 on the Hobie website, listing the H16 Capacity as 800lbs (which seems to be a lot to me). Can anyone help me out, or at least point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Rod |

I doubt you'll find any official MAX capacity for each boat, and a lot depends on weather conditions. In lighter wind, you can carry a much higher load, but when the wind comes up, the hulls will start to submarine. Here is a rough estimate of the maximum realistic crew weights for each boat. This is just my estimation based on experience, I've sailed all of the boats mentioned: H14 ~ 300LB (two mid-sized adults) H16 ~ 400 LB (three mid-sized adults) H18 ~ 450-500LB (three mid-large adults) H20 ~500 LB (three large adults or 4 smaller people) sm |

A. How much weight can a Hobie take before the gunwales are under water? B. How much weight can a Hobie take and still sail, somewhat....? C. How much weight can a Hobie take and still perform well? Like SRM said, A probably is that 800 lbs mark you read about. We've put six on a H16, including a lot of beer, not to be recommended. B, is what SRM said, although I suggest the Hobie will wallow around a bit. C is much more limiting. Class Rules for a H16 for example, require a minimum weight of 285 lbs, and anything over 320 lbs, the boat starts to waddle. On my H18 SX, two adults of 175 lbs each = 350 lbs, and I can feel the boat is more sluggish than when my son and I race. Yet we have often sailed recreationally with three or four adults, we just don't go as fast, and we tack or gybe more carefully. |

I had to laugh one time when I saw a Hobie 16 with 3 adults on board. They were going downwind with everyone on the rear, then they turned upwind and the boat rose up and flipped over backwards. I'll probably never see that again. |

You can still sail with three adults on a Hobie 18. My bother and me are 260 lbs EACH (!) and we already had his son (120 lbs) together with us on the boat. So around 700 lbs it ain't no sport anymore, but it's still sailing. |
