Not the furry one on ur couch, I'm talking about the catamaran u ocassionally take friends sailing with. Do u carry liability insurance in case someone aboard is injured ?

Yes, mostly because it is generally required for racing these days. Although at this point, I would probably have it even if I didn't race just because there are a lot of crazy/foolish/irresponsible boaters that we share the water with. It is relatively inexpensive, somewhere around a hundred bucks a year.

If I remember correctly, liability was covered on my home owners insurance. Hull insurance (equivalent to collision in a car) had to be purchased.

I talked about this to my insurance company when I got it - I don't remember the details but I assume I must have it covered somewhere under my various policies or I'd have done something about it. Now I'm thinking I should double check. It's not just someone aboard - it's anyone you have an encounter with (swimmer, power boater, etc).

When my boat is sitting on the trailer in the yard or being towed behind my car, my homeowners or auto policy likely covers the boat also. However, when I'm out on the water or racing it is another matter. I have a separate liability policy for just the boat for all the reasons stated by srm above.

I got a liability policy for my Getaway through same company as homeowners for $100/ year
well worth peace of mind..be sure not to take any lawyers out and make everyone sign a release.
