I live in Canada along the border and found a used '87 hobiecat 16 in Maine for sale at a really good price. Getting the boat across the border is no problem however the trailer which was manufactured by Highland (1987) doesn't have a VIN on the trailer. The seller has the registration paperwork for the trailer indicating its a 1987 Highland Trailer and it has a VIN however for Canada Customs there has to be a VIN physically on the trailer and a manufacturer sticker (both of which are absent). I did a search but can't find any info... is Highland still in business? I was hoping they might be able to make a VIN plate and send a replacement sticker for the trailer. I feel like this is a futile exercise but its such a good price compared to the next cheapest I can find at home here in NB. |

I have a couple of Highlander trailers from the early 80s. I don't think they build cat trailers anymore, but they may still be in business. |

It's not worth the hassle for a 30 yr old trailer. |

In the state of Illinois, I've registered trailers with lost titles as "homemade". They issue a VIN number and title, and I've written the VIN number on with permanent marker onto a white patch spray painted onto the tongue. Cheesy, I know, but a simple solution. You could stamp the VIN in with metal number stamps. |

Many trailers, not unlike Hobie's themselves, often just have the VIN engraved on the tongue. Engraving tools are pretty inexpensive...Just saying ![]() |
