I've read through as much as I can on this topic in the forums and I can't seem to find an answer. When using a Mast Stepper II type of system, is there a reason why you would not use the main halyard instead of the forestay? Is the halyard not strong enough? Not good for the comp tip? I tried it this past weekend and it seemed to work but it concerns me that I don't see any other examples using the halyard. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. |

My guess is that when using a gin-pole type system, the strength of the halyard may be questionable. Because of the low angles involved when doing a dead lift of the mast from horizontal, there is a lot of load on the forestay/lifting wire. The halyard may not break, but it may get "springy" depending on what size mast you're stepping and what diameter/type of halyard you're using. So maybe that's why using an actual metal wire is the preferred method. sm |

Correct. Low angles make for higher loads. The halyard to the top of the mast would be a much lower angle than to the forestay. The forestay to mast tang is a much stronger component as well. The halyard and masthead are not designed for the loads... plus the stretch mentioned. |

I use my jib halyard. Just hook to my bridle, yank her up and cleat it down. Gives me all the time I need to hook up the forestay by myself. |
