I'm looking to replace my Hobie Getaway sails with custom sails like the Hugo Boss sails seen in the photo below. Can anyone recommend a source to get this done? I also welcome DIY advice. ![]() |

There are about 3 ways that I know you can do it. First is to have a sailmaker imprint the image in ink. This seems to be the most permanent but most costly option. Second, you can have a sailmaker or graphics supply (that offers exterior vinyl signage) make the image you want and then you, or a sailmaker, can apply it to the sail. This second option is more affordable but I've gone this route a couple times and while it works well, trying to apply a flat vinyl "sign" to a shaped sail isn't as easy as it might appear at first glance. The third option is the least expensive, you can do it yourself, but you will have to expect to spend hours and hours doing the work. You print out segments of your graphic, tape them up into to a full size template and then outline and color with a permanent Sharpie marker. Below is one I did for the headsail on my Astus. Took a week to do, working about 3 or 4 hours per day. Materials included about 60 Sharpie markers and about that same number of beers. But it looks good and has held up well. ![]() ![]() |

What is your sailcloth? Chip built me custom Pentex sails for my H18SX, with a sail # in black vinyl. Later, I 'named' my boat, and had a sign guy print out the name in black vinyl, of the 'peel and stick' variety. We found an empty office, unrolled the main sail, and he and his helper spent a few hours lining up the lettering, then peeling and sticking. It took longer than he thought, due to curvature of the main. Around $275 as I recall..... Vinyl comes in many colours. Sharpies may work better on dacron. |

I've only done it on spinnakers and only simple graphics (made a stars and stripes spinny). Process included cutting out the shape in different sailcloth color then sewing the (white star) onto the blue sail making sure the underlying cloth is stretched flat. Then carefully cut the underlying fabric out. Might be possible to do it that way with firm sailcloth like pentex or dacron...but words would be reversed on one side. Been considering adding a green jalapeno pepper to my red spinny and probably will do it over the winter (boat name SriRacha). |

Tom, nice work! I assume you're a designer like myself. I appreciate the breakdown of the variety of methods to have a custom graphic sail. I was thinking of having seafoam green sails with a white line pattern. The sharpie technique sounds doable, but since I want white on a green background, I'm wondering if acrylic paint would do the trick. Does anyone know if seafoam green is a color that's available? And can anyone recommend where to get a sail made? |
