Anyone have experience shipping sails? How much did it cost? Also, what is the best way to package the sails? Is it OK to fold sails if there are not battens? I may need to ship some from Hawaii to the mainland. |

More information please: Are they dacron or pentex or mylar sails? for an H16? H18? other? Your biggest challenge is going to be the UPS/Fedex/USPS limit on the length of the package/carton. Normally, I would suggest you roll (create a 'sausage' of bubble plastic, and roll the sail around that). However, if the foot of the mainsail is longer than the package length, you will have to fold. If the material is dacron, and assuming that delivery take less than a week, you should be okay, flaked or rolled. For Pentex, you may have some challenges. Pentex does not like to be folded or creased. SRM, others, any other experienced voices out there? Pricing: do you have any other options? |

Flake them, fold them, and put them in a box. Yes, rolling the sails is best, but let’s face it, do you really want to deal with shipping an 8 or 9 foot long box? They will be fine folded, and that’s the way Hobie ships them. Cost is dependent on the size and weight of the package and how far you’re shipping it. If you measure the size and weight, you can go to ups.com, punch in the data, and get an instant quote. I want to say the last time I shipped sails in the continental US, it was somewhere in the $30-50 ballpark for ground shipping. sm |
