Photo: Prize-winning Fleet 72 photographer Sue Wood Just look at that reflection! Fleet 72 had our first sail of the year (see write-up here, and more pictures here) at Yale, a hydro-power reservoir on the Lewis River in SW Washington. Good times were had by all, but that river feeds from the Cascades (you can see St. Helens quite close, from the middle of the lake - we need to get a camera out on a boat and get a picture, it's spectacular!). Brrrrrrrrr! |

The water is pretty low right now (the docks were sitting on the dry concrete of the launch ramp), thus the rockiness. Though, in the summer when the lake is full, this launch is FULL of jet-skiers and tubers. We generally sail from Cougar Campground further up the lake which has great sand and grass and some day-use docks as well as better wind. However, that Saturday we shared the lake with two kayakers and one crazy crew of wakeboarders who took off and we didn't see them again until they pulled out. There is a lack of sandy beaches around here - the Columbia and various lakes tend to be shored with pretty nasty volcanic chunks. Thankfully, we have at least three races this year scheduled for nice beaches - the First Annual Gorge Distance Race (shameless self promotion) will be on a nice though small beach on the Columbia, Skamokawa has a huge sandy beach on the lower Columbia (the just finished dredging the navigation channel last year and dumped the sand on the beach making it even bigger), and Westport, in Grays Harbor on the Pacific. |
