Post subject:  Serial# search

I just bought an old H16 in Southern California and I need to register it at the DMV, but the Serial numbers got covered by a new coat of paint.

I need the serial# to make out the DMV forms.

Is there a way I can get a serial# related back to a sail number, which I do have....hoping its the original sails.

Alternatively, is there some solvent that I can use to disolve the paint and expose the covered serial#. I imagine its some kind of epoxy paint that was used by the looks of it.

Help! Suggestions???

There is no direct correlation between sails and hull serial numbers. Not even something you can determine the year of a hull by. They are not matched up by the factory in any way. We used to (when I worked for a dealer) completely mix and match sails and hulls. Sometimes keeping sails or hulls for years before matching them up for a sale.

Maybe sand paper? Till you get to the original surface? Then the paint would make the serial number engraving stand out (assuming contrasting colors of course).

You could try making a rubbing. Since the serial number is engraved,
it could work.

To make a rubbing put a piece of paper over the area and rub it with
a hard crayon (paper removed) or the side of a pencil lead.

Do this BEFORE sanding!

Unfortunately the cover paint White, matches the original white hull....maybe slightly off, so sanding will be a last resort.

I'll try a rubbing but visually the surface looks smooth so I'm not very optimistic.

Were all the serial numbers free hand Electric Pencil Etched?
