most likely it's a hobie11. 11.5' length 160lbs. it was a scaled down version of the 14 for women and kids--people under 140lbs--since the 14 was considered a lot to handle for someone weighing less than that. they started making them quite a long time ago (in the 70's); i'm not sure when they stopped. |

It must be the 11, because the mast is only 18 feet. The 14 has a 22 foot mast. |

The 14 isn't enough boat if you're over a 140 lbs! Theres no flotation there. Throw an adult on that little guy it would get scary quick, and fun. Matt what is the beam? |

Everybody just STAND BACK!!!. I am bidding on that boat for my 8 year old, to get him out of that friggin' Opti, and hopefully to start crewing for my other son. If you guys bid me up, I'll be buying him an Xboat for sure. WE CAN'T HAVE THAT NOW, CAN WE??!!! Just say bye bye to the little hobie. |

Just a little heads up on the 3.5, Chris: The rudders are wooden - that's why the ad says "one is split". Not hard to fix, but for sure you'll want to seriously look at replacing them. (Hope your woodworking skills are up to snuff.) I think it shared rudders with the H-12 MonoCat. The mast base/step is the same as the MonoCat, too, so the mast section is the same. It may be the same extrusion as the 14/16 sidebars/boom/pylons. The boat is really tiny. When I worked for a Hobie dealer in the summer of '79, we had one and it looked like a toy model of a 14. You'll never be able to sail it yourself - you'd sink it. Hobie 3.5 History - introduced at about the same time as the H-18, it never really took off. It was purposely a kids' boat, but it shares some of the 14's nasty habits - hard to tack, pitchpole prone and hard to right (for someone small enough to make it go). Still, it's a cool little boat and a better option than the 14 for small kids. |
