Does an 89 Hobie 14 require the teflon washers at the base of its mast? Also, never having raised the once broken mast ever, how tight do the cables need to be? Shroud, forestay...?

Yup....it needs a mast bearing.

This is a "regular" H14 (not Turbo), right? If so, there's no need for the rig to be tight. In fact, the hot shots run them so loose that the mast has to be lashed down to the main beam so that it can't pop out of the step during a capsize. See Bob Curry's tuning guide

FYI....Nothing magic about the mast bearing....it's there just to minimize wear as the ball of the mast base rotates inside the cup of the mast step.

Good luck with your maiden voyage!
