Post subject:  new sails

It's time for new sails for my H21SE. Main and jib. Use will be moderate with no racing but I don't want the weight of dacron so I'm thinking Mylar. I'm not familiar with Pentex.
1. Any drawbacks to a squarehead?
2. Does mylar work OK in a roller furling jib?
The local guys I've been using for repairs have been disappointing lately and do not really get it on cat sails.
I got one quote from a well known sailmaker that I choked on.
Any thoughts on a source? Price is in the mix but not primary.

From my understanding, square heads are good. They reduce spilloff at the top.

I'll let the real geniuses reply regarding materials and what not.

Beachboy, If you checked out the H17 forum, I show some pictures of the new PENTEX square top I got for my H17Sport. Pentex is a plastic like sail with criscrossed reinforced filiments running through it (very strong, very low streach). I got mine through Whirlwind Sails @ ~ $1650.00 for the pentex SQ top and a dacron jib. The dacron rolls better on the furler. The sail construction quality is top notch. I've now had the new sails out in varying conditions (light wind up to 35 mph) and have found that they outperform the standard mylar sails. They seem to be more forgiving off wind in higher winds with the twist off effect and appear to point at least as well as the standard sails. On one high speed broad reach I buried the leeward hull in a 3 ft wave sending me from the aft end of the windward wing to the front crossbar, but I still avoided a capsize due in part to the twist off effect when I let go of the sheet (and the mad scramble to the back of the boat), it was a close one. 8)

Thanks guys. I talked for while with Chip today Whirlwind, he responded to my inquiry very quickly and returned my phone call quickly, a real plus for this sailor. He also recommended the dacron for the roller furled jib. I'm going with the Mylar main for my application though I understand that the Pentex is probably a higher performance sail material.
So it's a new suit for my 21, I can't wait.

Beachboy, great to hear. Chip was also very responsive to all my requests. What style of sail did you go for? :?:

Fastcat,
I checked out your pictures, sweet. Where did you get the Hobie "H" for the sail? Did you get new battens or use the old ones?

Chip provided the Hobie H and the sail #s as part of the deal. He also included the battens, but that was a special deal since I ordered in January (slack season). 8)

I waited until the last minute to order, I was actually considering buying a different boat. Chip says delivery inside two weeks.
