I've been thinking of securing 2 sheets of 1/2 in plywood, 2 ft x 8 ft each - spaced 4 ft apart for the hulls and partly in the water - to run my Hobie up on my sand beach. Should I consider other materials, like thick plastic sheets, something else? Any other tips on how I can do this, so i can get it up in and out of the water easily? Thanks! BJ |

When I was sailing off of a rocky beach I used a "ladder" made of 2.5 inch diameter PVC pipe. The rungs were about 8 feet wide and about 3 feet apart. I think there were four rungs total. I just put it down on the beach with one or two rungs in the water. The PVC is real slippery and made it easy to pull the boat out of the water. And it kept the hulls off the rocks. Steve H17 |

Beach launching of a Wave or H16 or similar is easy. Back in the day....the H21's were too heavy, so Matt Miller and others came up with a 'ladder' system. Take ~2" ABS pipes, and cut some pieces about 18" wide, drill holes in the ends, and thread rope through the holes. The pieces of pipe are the 'steps' of the ladder, each located about 24" apart. The verticals are the ropes, knotted so that the pipes stay and don't slide around. Make your ladder as long as your beach requires. Unroll the ladder, lay it out on the beach, now you can easily launch and return. The Hobie will smoothly slide up/down the ladder. I am sure someone has pictures somewhere.....I remember seeing some once..... |

Hobie used to market a product called the "Track Slide" or maybe it was only an option for the 21SC Similar in concept to the ABS pipe ladder. https://youtu.be/VIqAhV_ZEHA?t=158 |

I used plastic lattice that people put around the bottom of their decks I think it came in 2’ widths. Very slippery and durable. Won’t help with a really rocky beach, but does well on hard packed sand. The PVC pipe solutions work well too. Just be careful that the boat doesn’t slide back into the water in a gust. |
