This is a hobie 16 btw, but I assume most hobies have a similar mast base.

On to the question, do you use them? Is there an alternative? Some type of "home-made" remedy?

I know the cost is next to nothing, and I'm being dumb, but its how I am...I can't stand the idea of sailing requiring some type of consumable I can't get together on my own...hell I even make my own beer and use the spent grains to make dog biscuits.

I never seem to have any of the Hobie supplied chips readily available so I typically just use a quarter.

Is going through all the effort of making/finding a different bearing worth a couple of bucks?

If I can use something I normally put in the trash instead of buying something hell yeah it's worth it.

We consume and trash WAY too much in the States (I'm sure this is a world issue, but I'll not talk about what I don't know). It makes me sick to open a package, only to see more packaging. Milk cartons drive me (censored), were glass bottles that much more of a hassle? Buy, consume, pitch...BAH! I'm quickly approaching soapbox stage, I'll shut it now.
