Well, my diligent internet searching and contacts from this website have paid off! I purchased a 1991 Hobie 18 SE on Thursday. Trailer, new sails, low usage, racing tillers, no hull damage, cat wheels + box... only thing that really needs work is the tramp. Now I need to figure out how to get a boat from Cortez, CO (just West of nowhere) to Tulsa. Road trip? So expect the "how do I" or "why did it" questions to start in a few weeks. And the "where do I store it" questions too.

Congratulations, and welcome to the Hobie world, and the fun of sailing H18's. Tulsa to Cortez and back is a fair drive, enjoy the round trip. The expensive alternative is to have a freight company put the whole trailer on a flatbed/semi, and truck it to Tulsa. Mucho dollars. Hints - find out when the trailer's wheel bearings were last done, consider repacking them. And don't be cheap on buying new tires, if required. If the trailer is typical, and is supplied with single rollers front and rear, consider buying Hobie cradles to replace the front rollers, and double tilting rollers for the rear. Save yourself a hull job later on. Also better for storage. Remember the little things, like taking your tools with you, like checking the trailer wiring, the tie-downs and safety chains, and the extra length when you overtake. I got bored in my Accord at 55 mph, driving from London in SW Ontario to Ottawa in Eastern Ontario, (Canada), but it sure saved on gas and wear and tear. I used the extra time to plan my sailing season, especially in the two hours it took to get across Toronto - what horrible traffic! New tramps are not that expensive, considering. You were probably the only person doing less than 140 kph on the 401/QEW. Traffic in Canada moves fast, eh? Except around TO. |

Congrats; The 18 is a wonderful boat. many people will try to help you with questions. Best to ask on the H-18 forum. BTW: I found out where the MI Hobie 18s are located, about 9 of them on the same beach now along with some 16s, but the 18s outnumber them.
