Post subject:  Mast tang

My halyard lock spit out the movable piece at the masthead on my H21SE. I can still use it with the sail raised fully by rotating the mast away from the sail. My problem is when I take a reef I can't get the ring to twist away from the hook. Had to do a static capsize this weekned to get unhooked, wife hates that procedure. The 21 SE is a big boat for two people to bring over. If I didn't have the shroud extenders it would have been extremely difficult.
At any rate, I like the way it used to work and would love to get it back. Even if I could get the proper profile I could make one, it's only a flat peice of stainless with a single hole. This time I would replace the rivet witha bolt.
Anyone know where I can get a Halyard lock assembly #3161-0001 or just the movable peice?

Post subject:  Reef a Hobie 21SE?

The 21 SE was not designed for a reef in the main. It was also not designed with the movable piece for the halyard lock. That was discontinued as a part of the Hobie 18 in the Pre-CompTip days... so not sure what you had there. Likely a custom part.

This is not available from Hobie Cat in any case.

Matt, I know it wasn't designed for a reef but if you sail it with two people, as I do, it gets overpowered pretty quickly. It wasn't designed for a motor either but the Cheata bracket and a little two horse Honda work wonders on a calm day or a crowded harbor.
I was aware that the lock has been discontinued. I was just looking to restore it to it's original state.
With Sail # 100 I believe it is an '88 H21SE. I also am pretty sure the top hook release/lock was standard on the boat.

In any case... the release feature is not on any available replacement parts we have for the 21SE or any other model boat.

Brian Cunningham was able to take of me, great service from your dealer, Mariner Sails in Dallas as usual.
FYI Matt, In my Illustrated Parts Guide the movable part and the hook, called "Halyard Lock Assembly" #3161-0001, the small, movable tang that releases the halyard ring is clearly visible in the drawing. It was not a custom part.
Interesting enough though, no mention of this part in the Assembly Manual and it is absent in the drawing of the masthead.
