Blue and red sails, thats cool. I don't know about the "will give existing F16 type boats racing boats serious competition" note on there. Seems to me it would have to get on one hell of a diet to make that happen. What was the context of this? I wonder if this is a EU thing only?

I think the FXone class in the US needs to be similar to the F16 class. Keep the sail plan flexible as well as singlehand, and 2up configuration. All we need now is a F17 class.

Matt M.- what do you know about this?

Well the current (2007) rating of the FX-One (2) = 105. Can only assume with this new sail plan measures it in at 104. Still 104 is not 102, the current (2007) F16 (2) rating. BTW, F18 = 101.

I think it's more of a France thing than EU necessarily, F104 is what they're calling it?

MattM, any comments on the vinylester construction?

Indeed it is a French thing at the moment. I wondered how the US Hobie sailors are thinking about the F16? No US plans of becoming compliant?

Current F18 rating = 1.005, F16 = 1.008.

I was also reading on the forum and saw that some people were throwing bad commets towards the F16 without any reason or grounding for it.
At the Global Challenge in Holland in 2007 all the competing cats didn't break ANYTHING in waves of 1,5 metres and 5 beaufort of wind with gusts above that!

That person also said the boats were to light and that was why they broke. Now if you compare to the new BIM 16foot or A-cat you all know that is quite a silly reason.

Gill,

What is the current FX-One rating?

A very nice formula, great versatility, the lighter weight is very intriguing. If you search deeper in these threads you'll find enthusiasm, but it's clear Hobie US will not be building an F16.

To the F16 rule set? With what Hobie product?

I would think of the FX One. Rating is already close, but I must say I don't know the exact dimensions of the FX One to know what should be changed exactly. (I suppose the length of the hulls should be changed... and that is quite a big change...)

Yes, dimensionally the are many differences. That would be a major change.

Our USA Hobie F16 hope is if "your" Hobie France is the manufacturer. (Even that is a dream as the H16 is such a successful class worldwide) It is interesting though that the F16 has a limited awareness in France. Good luck to you all at Carnac. Please make a big impression. :)

That would be me making most of the nasty comments on the F16. I was just going off of what another sailor, (dear GOD, he wasn't even a Hobie sailor), told me about the F16 and I would take his word as gospel.
Weight is directly proportional to strength material for material, workmanship for workmanship. Hell, my boat is probably more brittle than I'd like. Being underbuilt to make weight is one thing entirely different. And who know's, maybe things have changed, I've started to hear a few people owning up to the shortcomings in build quality in the earlier models. Get over it, this is the growing pains of virtually every new product. Computer products, cars whatever, the newest thing usually is unreliable untill the bugs are worked out. It's a cool platform and a cool concept. I'm sure it will do very well in the years to come.

As far as F16's in the US go there isn't that many. i think most of them are in Florida and Texas. In the midwest it is purely Hobies and some Nacra's.

Take your F16 preaching to Catsailor.

I'm just all pissy because I haven't even seen my boat in 2 months much less had any hope of sailing it anytime in the next 3 months.

I'm not preaching, I'm just putting things straight. I know a lot of people get influenced by these forums, so an honest comment on the F16 is the least that should be on here.

Secondly, as you should know, F16 isn't necessary on the catsailer.com forum. It's the most active forum after the open forum there.

They are out.

(OK, I'm preaching a little after all).

Hobie Cat USA have not imported F 18 specific aftermarket type sails. There hasn't been any demand for them - as well, all the top teams are not using these horizontal cut sails. (the current top place Tiger sailors all used standard sails at the most recent F18 World Championships)
