A lot of 16s were made in 1982.

It may have been the highest production year - tens of thousands.

Boats were heavier and probably had quality problems because of the production volume.

You need to be more specific.

Hey jwest,

I saw the craigslist ad for the "Custom 16.5" Hobie. :shock:

It is a Hobie 16 just like all the other Hobie 16's. Nothing special or custom that I can tell from the photo. They are actually 16' 7" long, maybe that's where this guy picked up 16.5

Do a search on this forum for questions to ask, or things to look at when buying a used boat.

You were born in 1982? That's funny, I was a sophmore in HS and pretty much in the midst of partying myself silly. I saw The Who in '82, first big time concert. Magnaum PI and Knight Rider were cool shows then.

im new to beach cats and sailing in general. it seems '84 hobie cats are popular boats.... are 1982's not,why? are '83 or '85 better than '84, why? obviously, the condition of the boat itself is important. i was just wondering if a particular yr. is better than an other..... also is a '82 hobie 16' in good to fair condition w/ trailer worth $2000? ~thx [/img]

In 1984, Hobie Cat started making the boats about 20# lighter. That's why they're more popular.

I'd hard to make a judgement without a physical inspection, but if the boat has no soft spots or major repairs, the mast is straight, then it might be worth $2K

Unless the sails have been properly stored for 25 years, they are probably only good for day sailing. The hiking straps are probably gone from the trampoline, but they are easily replaced.

Plan on about $500 for replacing the standing rigging (wires) and all the running rigging (ropes), if they are original.

thanks for your reply.... so from the pics sent to me that the hiking strapping is intact. its the 3"-4" webbing sewn to the top of the trampoline for holding the sail/ropes? from the pics they've sent the boat looks to be in good condition but i feel that im dont have the experience to determine its value.

82' good to fair condition w/ trailer is more like $500-900. Keep looking. Try to find one with hard hulls, harken blocks, descent tramp, and descent sails. They are out there. Type "hobie 16 for sale" into any search engine and sift through the results, or " hobie 16 craigslist " is good too. Finding one geographically close should be a factor as well. I think people over pay for 16's on ebay. Try to find a seller marketing to a smaller audience. You should be able to get a really good condition 80-89, ready to go boat, between $1,200-2k. Buying a used hobie is kind of like baseball. Never swing at the first pitch, as never buy the first one you see, unless your armed with knowledge or can take someone with first hand experiance help you make a smart decision.

You going to haul that 20 up to our area and race around the cans with us? Frayed Knot (Lawrence) is April 26th & 27th, Wichita on May 17th & 18th, Clear Lake, Iowa on May 24th & 25th. All will be heavily attended by 20's warming up for NAC's. Carve out a weekend and make the trip!

Ask us more questions after you go look at the boat again. Guys, IF it passes the solid deck test, the boat has a galvanized trailer, with fiberglass toy box, and a set of cat trax. That's a major factor in why he's asking $2K.

EVERYONE thinks their stuff is worth its weight in gold. $2000 for anything older than a really nice 87 coleman boat with an awesome sail and perfect trailer is TOO MUCH.
Buzz is right. These things are dime a dozen, just look at a bunch of boats first before jumping headlong. Bounds is right too, you get a 'nice' boat that needs standing rigging, new sheets, upgraded blocks, maybe some good rudders, and you could have bought a new boat for all that.
Buying and Selling used Hobies is more science than you think. Trust me. 8) I have talked to people that tried to get $2500 for a crappy orange and white 1976 boat on a rusty trailer (they took $500 cash after I explained what a piece of shi t their boat was) and I have talked to people with a really nice 1990, that gave it up for only $800 (after I explained what a piece of shi t their boat was) I think the key here, is try to explain to them, that what they have, is a piece of shi t. Once they are desperate to sell if for any price, then make them a reasonable offer of $500. That price works for almost any year Hobie 16 prior to '86. Buzz, don't you agree?

I've seen the pictures of this boat and it fits the bill of "really good". It has a comp-tip mast, is Hobie Alter addition, dbl trap w/J&H, "nice" tramp, galv. trailer, cat box, cat trax, looks like it has been garaged or covered. jwest doesn't know yet if it includes 6:1 or hot stick, quick pins and all that, or if the sails have any torn batten pockets, rudder cams need replaced, etc. Told him to have the guy set it all up and prove everything is there...and if decks are sold, make him a LOW starting offer. FYI

cool... thanks for all your replies. im going down to check it out this weekend. i dont think the guy knows how or is willing to take the time to set up the boat. ive asked him to and send me pics, but he just sent a pic of a sail roiled up in the storage box. you'd think if the boat is rigged with nice traps that the sail, mast, etc. would be good to go... from J_Eaton's opinion of the pics he viewed im willing to offer the guy $1300-$1500firm. wish i new how to set one up myself......
