Post subject:  Sailing in NO Wake zone
How does one control the speed in a no wake zone? what should one do to keep the speed down?

Out of curiosity, what is required in your state for registering and titling a hobie 16.

In Florida, I think you only have to get a title since you are solely wind powered.

Are there any other requirements that I should know about?

I read the boaters guide for florida but some things seem so gray.

Offer to tow a powerboat in/out of the harbor to save the poor souls a little gas :lol:

Seriously, I think the purpose of the no wake zone is for safety, yes speed realted, but also to limit unecessary wave disturbances which otherwise could upset docked boats or cause environmental damage. A cat by virtue of the twin hulls, cancels out 1/2 of its own wake. So, I would not worry about the 'wake', but as for the speed, well, it is a 16 :wink: , so I guess if you can limit speed by luffing your sails and some strategic rudder movements, I doubt anyone would bother you.

As for registration/title, well, here in Maine non-motorized boats do not require registration. I never got a title with purchase of my new Wave. I seroiusly doubt a title would issued for a 16 either.

In Minnesota you won't have a title unless there is a lien on it. My first 16 had no title, but the second one I owned did because I had to borrow to buy it.

Well, I went in and they did make me Title and Register it even though I told them I would not put a motor on it. Since the laws in florida mention that as a distinction. The person at the DMV/TITLE department said since its over 14 feet regardless of motor it needs a title and registration....

In other words, Florida wants more revenue....show me the fricken money.

they ripped your off....Got this from the Lee county Florida tax collector website:

Vessels Exempt From Registration

Vessels exempt from registration include:
Non-motor-powered vessels, (if you have a non-motor-powered vessel that is 16 feet or longer, you need a title but you do not need a yearly registration.)
Vessels used exclusively on private lakes and ponds.
Vessels owned by the United States Government.
Vessels used exclusively as a ship's lifeboat.

No clue about the no wake thing, I'd have to tell them I'd get right on throttling my invisible engine down.

Even in strong winds, the 16 doesn't seem to produce any noticeable wake.


Ohio requires a title and registration every three years.
My canoe gets registration but not title.

Thanks all for your help, I got my money back on the title and registration since it is not required in Florida. I phoned Marine Patron directly and sited the quote from Lee County's site...

No wake zones are for power boats. They're there to stop people from coming in wide open and roughing up the water near where boats are docked or people swimming.

In MI where I live the no wake zones also have a speed limit as well (6 mph). My friend years ago got a ticket for speeding on his Hobie 16 while going through the channel into lake Michigan. Perhaps it was because he was flying a hull 8)

A good friend of mine did frame the ticket he got for speeding in the harbor at Marina Del Rey on his D class catamaran during a Santa Anna wind. He thinks he could have avoided the ticket had he not stopped his foot on the tramp while yelling "no brakes" to the officer who told him to slow down

The wise thing to do in a no wake zone is to make as little disturbance as possible for both your own safety and for the rest of us multihullers. You know why jetskis are universally hated? Because they mostly hotrod around obnoxiously.
Think about the next time you're out in the harbor about how those other boaters will view you if you take the attitude that a speed limit doesn't apply to you.
Don't get me wrong. I like to go fast as much as the next guy. I gave up sailing into the dock last year when I heard that even though it was perfectly legal it made a lot of other boaters really nervous.
It will benefit you and all other multihullers if you can simply cool your hulls while in the no wake zone, then when you're outside, fly a hull, make some spray, go for it.

LOL... so funny.

On the monohaul, we prefer to drop sail and motor into the harbors, it's just safer to do... But in the 16.. you don't really have many options.

As for speeding... eff those guys. How fast was he really going? Honestly... 10 kts? Did he clock him with radar? I'd frame it.. but I'd take that baby to court. :)

Hell, I'd get teeshirts made with the ticket printed right on there. Thats pretty friggin' cool if you ask me. You'll never see a Sunfish, Laser, 420, Cscow, J-anything or butterfly sailor with a trohpy speeding ticket. Relish in the coolness of your speed.
