One piece gugeons on a 17??

Post subject:  One piece gugeons on a 17??
I was considering getting the new one-piece gugeons for my H-17, but I noticed that they're only listed for the 16 and 18. Since the 18 and 17 use the same rudder castings will these work on the 17? My thought is that the drain plug on the 17 might interfere with the new gugeons. Is this the case?

I've never seen the one-piece gudgeons used on a 17. The 17 uses a different top gudgeon than the 18 (it's a "half" gudgeon), so I suspect the answer is "no".

My boat is one of the last new ones built and it still has the "old" style gudgeons.

Retrofitting my H17 gudgeons has been on my to-do list for a while. It looks like the one-piece casting can be shortened (see the red line I drew on the pic below) just cut it there, and drill new mounting holes between the gudgeons (keep them low, as my markings suggest - which is where all the pull force is during a rudder grounding)

Mystery pic: I am unsure as to the intended boat. The above pic was lifted from a catsailor ad stating "$32.80 for the 14/16" "$49.10 for the 18/20" which suggests two different designs. Chime in if you can identify it.

If I try this I'll reply with results.

Did you ever end up doing this?

I got to thinking about it again (a year later) and although the 17 uses a different top gugeon than the 18, the spacing between the gugeons has to be the same since both boats use the same lower rudder casting. Next time I have a 17 and 18 side by side, I'll check the hole spacing, but right now, I can't think why using the 18 one-piece wouldn't work on the 17.

Hi SRM,

I bought the castings, and found that the pins that came with the castings were impossible to move by hand, right out of the box. Add a rudder to the equation and you'd need a hammer. That is the exact problem I was seeking to cure. I was hoping for a slight +.001 - .002 slip fit, so I could get the pins in and out by hand.

I stayed with my shimmed rudder arrangement, and then bought stainless pins to replace the aluminum ones. Removal and replacement now happens with mild coaxing, and on occasion a small amount of tapping with a hammer.

Dan- Could you clarify, did you end up using the one-piece H18 gougeon on the H17? I realize that the pins may have been tight, but did you just swap out the pins, or did you end up not using the one-piece gougeon all together?

If you didn't use the one-piece gougeon, is there any reason that you see that it wouldn't work on the 17? (Other than the pin being snug). Any issues with screw hole alignment or the drain plug fitting getting in the way?

I did not use the one piece unit. Unfortunately, my memory of what was involved in modifying it to fit the 17 is unclear. I believe it was shaped like the pic above, but I am not entirely certain. Jeremy sold them to me, you may want to ask him to send you a pic.

Just checked the 2009/10 Hobie catalog. It now says one-piece gugeon 60102011 is for both the 17 & 18.
